Trending: “Ugly” Shoes

Sometimes, ugly is pretty.  And others, ugly is just, well, ugly.  When it comes to fashion, how do you know the difference?  This is where the old saying: “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” most definitely answers the question!  There have been eras that the high heel has been the go-to shoe for the season, which most would consider a beautiful shoe.  I would imagine, however, there are plenty of people who do not agree that the high heel is “beautiful”…and the point I’m making is that what is beauty is often subjective…especially in the area of footwear!  It is no secret though that this season’s style is dominated by “ugly” shoes.  It’s the “ugly chic” trends that have been popping up everywhere, from the runway to the streets!  Let’s break it down.

No, you are not hallucinating, that is a bedazzled Croc.  We just saw these beauties (??) take a stroll down the runway in the Christopher Kane show just a few weeks ago during New York Fashion Week.  Now you guys, I like a lot of ugly shoes.  But Crocs?  I think these are almost always universally considered a functional, not a beautiful, shoe.  This is just the beginning though.  Here’s some of the other trends happening that, well…could go either way!

Uggs.  I think you know my feelings about insanely furry shoes…(if you don’t, I’m definitely PRO them!) and these are the ultimate fur boot.

Furry athletic slides.  Sure, they’re silly.  But, hey, they could probably be cute on, right?

Clogs.  These range in how pretty/ugly they can be, but a lot of people find clogs to be quite unattractive, and vice versa.

Birkenstocks.  To me, these are a lot like Uggs.  They will always be “out”, and yet always be “in” in some crowds!

And the CROWNING JEWEL.  Ugg and Teva have teamed up to make this…er…masterpiece.  They will set you back $225, and, well, I’m not gonna comment on them, because I think I trust you to decide for yourself.  Please choose wisely.  I implore you.

Ugly or pretty?  You decide!  I love me some crazy furry weird shoes, so honestly I’m loving all this crazy footwear, no matter if I love each individual pair or not, I love the creativity and FUN of it all!

Happy Tuesday

Fashion Feelings: Flowers Are Better Than Numbers

I hate it when passwords have to have numbers in them.  You know why?  I can’t remember numbers.  The first two years of my marriage, I wrote down our anniversary on the calendar on the wrong date.  My husband just looked at me and was like…”why are you writing our anniversary down on that date…you know that’s not actually our anniversary, right?”  Yep.  Two years in a row, no joke.  Remembering my kids’ birthdates or trying to figure out what year it is…my brain rejects numbers vehemently.  I remember things by pictures, words, or by where the nearest Starbucks is to them.

For all you numbers people out there, seriously, I have so much respect for you.  How would we function without you??  This is not meant to offend you, this is just my brain and how it thinks!  I often wish numbers could be replaced with words.  It would be so much easier…common questions like “what time is it?” or “how old are you?” could be answered with colors or feelings.  I could remember that so much easier!  Taking this even further, potentially offensive questions like “how much do you weigh?” or “how old are you?” could become much less horrifying with answers like “feathers” and “happy” (respectively, obviously!)  Yes, I think I am on to something.  Granted, everyone may be in a constant state of confusion, but hey, there would be no more math and that would sure help my brain out a lot!

So today, I’m flowers years old and I weigh roses!  Florals are IN FOR FALL (can I get a hallelujah?!) and I’m so down with that!

Rocking florals for fall is all about LAYERS!  Take a floral sundress (you have one of those right?) and put a shirt under it, or throw a jacket over it, and you are fall ready!  I love the idea of taking a scrappy dress and putting it over a shirt.  It’s super hot right now and is a lot more fun and wearable than you think it is!  Here is a gorgeous (and under $100) idea for a fall floral maxi and here is a great layering piece for underneath to take that dress right into the new season.

Happy weekend :)

Fashion Feelings: Fear Factor

I’m not a huge reality tv fan.  I watch the occasional season of The Bachelor, but for the most part, I’d usually choose something with more of a story line than reality television typically has to offer.  But boy did I love to watch Fear Factor.  Remember that show?  Something about watching people eat bugs (and much, much worse things), jump off high buildings, and lay down in spiders just really never got old!  Maybe it was Joe Rogan’s snide comments, maybe it was watching to see how far someone would go for money…it was all just quite entertaining.  I was recently thinking about that show, and envisioning how it would go if it was all about fashion.

I imagine it would go something like this: the announcer would introduce the contestants.  “This is Mary, and she’s a mother of three from Ohio!  Her biggest fear is wearing shorts!  This is Jennifer, she’s a businesswoman from Maryland and she never ever wears anything other than black!  And finally, we have Susan from Washington, and she never EVER wears dresses!”  I’m already hooked on this show.  Let’s get this straight.  I do not like seeing people uncomfortable in any way, shape or form.  (Unless it’s eating bugs for money, because that’s their decision isn’t it!?)  But I DO love watching people face their fears and conquer them!  I love watching a woman walk into the store, try something on that she never would have had the confidence to wear without it being suggested to her, and leave feeling like a million bucks because that one “scary” item of clothing actually makes her look AMAZING.  Yes, this is my kind of fear factor!  Here are some things that I think women are commonly afraid to wear, just from my experience: shorts, sleeveless tops, dresses, bright colors, patterns, bell bottoms or flared jeans, skinny jeans, and anything deemed “too young” for them.  For sure, not all of those things are for every single person, but I’d wager a guess that there is probably something in that “fear factor” category that not only would work for you, but would REALLY WORK FOR YOU.  I’m pitching my show idea to Fox. (just kidding)

I saw this look in a magazine and I thought to myself: “this is a fashion fear factor look if I ever saw one!”  I mean, bold jacket, brooches, shorts over tights, AND a bare midriff??  This would send some women into the fetal position just thinking about wearing this!

So for me, my “fear factor” is the bare midriff.  My midriff has never been the most visually amazing part of my body, and hey, that’s okay, because in real life bare midriffs aren’t really all that socially acceptable after junior high.  I decided to recreate this look for fun, but with my own take.  Swap the bralette for a vintage cami top and you eliminate the midriff issue!

I love how tights help kind of smooth out legs under shorts!  While it is usually considered a bold style choice, it can also help out a little with those who are less than comfortable with their legs being bare.  I also love the balance of a short skirt or shorts with a long sleeve top or jacket.  It’s perfect for the more temperate climates as well as being a nice contrast.

The moral of this story is: face your fashion fears in manageable ways and don’t eat bugs no matter how much money you’re being offered.  Because, yuck.

Switch It Up: Velvet

This fall 2016 trend was made for me.  I mean, let’s get real.  When velvet is not a trend, I will still be happily wearing it in every piece of clothing possible.  I love velvet.  I want everything in my house to be velvet.  It’s my favorite fabric!  So when I started seeing this luxurious fabric pop up everywhere in magazines and on the runway, I let out a resounding cheer and began buying even more of it.  Naturally.

Now not everyone feels this way about it, I understand.  While I love velvet pants and wear them like most people would wear jeans…like a basic…this is not something that everyone would do.  Why not explore some options on how to wear this (amazing) trend, in ways that are economical and approachable?  I have a few options for you in this department!  And none of them are pants, because y’all already know how I feel about them velvet bells. ;)

Committed Relationship

This look is basically a runway hack for the velvet trend.  While you could spend a lot on a velvet dress (which is perfectly acceptable), you could also go to the pajama section of the thrift store (my all time favorite section after the costume section) and keep your eyes out for a nightgown/robe like this one!  The velvet dress is not for the faint of heart, but it is very fall and winter appropriate and very chic.  Keep accessories simple, as this is a statement piece all on it’s own, and boots really make the look wearable.  This dress is a gorgeous option for fall if you’re looking for a very wearable piece!

Just a Tad

If you’re feeling like wearing velvet may be too much for you but you really like this trend and want to mix it in, try a pair of velvet booties!  This makes the trend a little more of an accessory and you can easily wear them with a tee and jeans like I did here.  This pair is very unassuming and not as loud as mine are!

With Some Velvet On Top

Adding a velvet blazer to your look is a great halfway point between completely committed and wearing it as an accessory…and it’s so rock and roll!  Throw one on over a graphic or a band tee with some jeans and you’re an instant cool girl.  You can also put one over a button down with a pencil skirt if you’d like to keep your look more structured and office appropriate!  Either way, it kind of adds that little je ne sais quoi to your look that takes it to the next level.  This blazer is on sale for an insane price and…I want it!!!

No matter how you wear it, it’s a fun trend to try and I hope you’re giving it a test run!

Trending: Snowden

Okay, thank GOODNESS Tamron Hall said it this morning on the TODAY Show.  When the upcoming movie about Edward Snowden came up in discussion (which is aptly named “Snowden”) she said: “when I heard about this, I was like…’wait, WHO is Edward Snowden again?'”  Thank you Tamron.  I’m not the only one.  Yes, I most definitely recognized the name when I heard it, and my brain wanted to say…government secrets, maybe? when I heard it…but till I watched the preview and began to hear about the film, I couldn’t quite remember who he was.  Thanks to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, now we can all refresh our memory, be entertained, and terrified all at the same time.

From what I hear, this movie will make you throw your phone and all other electronic devices, and move to a remote island in Greece, all after getting a fake identity and passport.  Great.  Just what I need.  More paranoia in my life.  But I can’t help but wanna see this movie after the trailer…it just looks so dang interesting!

You know what’s funny about this movie though?  My husband and I, having been completely deprived of all our favorite television shows at the moment, have been rewatching Third Rock From The Sun (do you see where I’m going with this?).  And seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in these two roles side by side, is, well, amusing.

Does he not look EXACTLY the same just with less hair?  Hilarious.  I love it when child actors can continue to make it as adult actors in new roles.  And who knows…this new role could possibly land him an Oscar nomination…I mean, the movie is getting a lot of buzz and it’s just about that season!

Okay.  If you are spying on my through my computer cam, please know that I WILL get to the mound of laundry and I will eventually wash my “cleaning day” shirt.  Eventually.

Happy spying

Trending: Upcoming Fall Shows

The end of summer means one thing to me (besides pumpkin spice lattes, obvi): FALL TV!  Oh how the long warm days filled with the barbecues and beach trips (or in my case more like sweaty toddler wrangling trips to Target) have been nice, but nothing, NOTHING floats my boat like new fall tv.  Yes, I will wholeheartedly admit that I love my tv shows.  And checking out new shows is a whole new set of fun!  Which ones will I FALL in love with (hehe I have GOT to stop with these puns)?  Which ones will be giant disappointments and end up in the “hey remember that one show that lasted like two episodes?” category?  We just won’t know until it all starts up in a couple of weeks!  Now, while I do love quite a few shows, I’m quite discriminating on which shows I do watch (if you’ve read my post on movies, you have probably already guessed this)…so…yeah.  I’m a choosy person when it comes to my entertainment :)

Let’s talk new shows.  The elusive, to be determined, unwatched premieres of fall 2016.  I feel like some dramatic music should play right now…these are the shows I’m most excited to check out and hopefully welcome to my family of favorites!

Timeless
This show is described as “an unlikely trio traveling through time to battle unknown criminals in order to protect history as we know it.”  Um, yes please.  Plus, the vintage fashion that I’m seeing in the previews is a MAJOR bonus.

Notorious
Piper Perabo.  Should I go on?  This new crime/legal drama looks like it has major promise.  And Piper Perabo.

The Good Place
So…I think Kristen Bell and I could be BFF’s.  She loves sloths to the point of tears, I have weird emotional affinities towards bizarre animals too…she’s quirky and funny and likes to make homemade music videos…I just love the girl.  So her new show is most definitely my top most anticipated new comedy of the season.

The Perfectionists
I can’t talk about the fact that Pretty Little Liars is ending after this next season.  I can’t talk about it, you guys.  It’s too emotional.  So, the fact that I. Marlene King (PLL producer) is doing yet another Sara Shepard book (PLL books author) on ABC Family…gives me hope for a new show about girls harboring secrets.  I’m a sucker for a great teen mystery.  I just can’t help myself!

Good Girls Revolt
Okay, have you seen the premiere episode of this AMAZING new show on Amazon yet?  I am RIVETED.  60’s fashion?  Check.  Women in journalism?  Check.  Great writing?  Check.  Girl power?  Check!  SLAM DUNK!  New episodes are starting soon and IT’S ABOUT TIME!!

I’m looking forward to my returning favorites as well like Grimm, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Teen Wolf, Jane the Virgin, iZombie, and so many more…ahhhhhh yes.  Pumpkin spice and my tv shows are nice!  I love fall so much :)

Trending: Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING

It’s that time of year once again where the leaves are turning brown (I live in California, everything’s basically brown year round), there’s a chill in the air (it’s 90 degrees here today), and everyone’s drinking their first hot pumpkin spice latte (key word here is *hot.  I’m sweating just thinking about it).  What does it all mean?  Two things.  First, fall is here (let the angels sing) and second, America is obsessed with putting pumpkin spice on EVERYTHING.  My husband actually put it on his eggs the other morning.  Hold up with the judgement you guys it was a complete mistake and he most definitely regretted that one, so don’t go planning your breakfasts just yet!  And while people may laugh and make fun of the obsession, I gotta say, it’s a pretty worthwhile thing to be crazy about.  I mean, who doesn’t love fall, and who doesn’t love pumpkins??

Besides the lattes and the eggs (just kidding guys!), the other thing that I’m crazy over right now is the pumpkin COLOR that’s trending for fall!  Sometimes I think that this year someone peered into my brain and came up with the trends because like 40 percent of my closet is orange!  That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I LOVE ORANGE!  Here’s some runway inspiration to check out…you’ll see what I’m talking about.  It’s like they’re wearing their PSL’s…

As you can see…it’s all ORANGE!  I understand, not everyone is crazy about the color and it definitely can come off a little Halloween-y, so I found a few picks of my own that are a fun addition to any fall wardrobe, and aren’t all as committed as that furry sweater and skirt (gimme gimme gimme gimme).

This Zara dress is amazing with all those fall colors, and has oranges and reds all blended together…an easy wear for the orange phobic!

I absolutely LOVE this H&M kimono cardigan!  It’s a great layering piece in THE color for fall! (it’s only $13!)

Look how adorably retro this skirt from Forever 21 is!

And the piece that EVERYONE NEEDS…velvet bells.  These babies are custom made and freaking gorgeous!  Love a good Homecookedkarma bell bottom!

Whether you love orange or not, hope you’re enjoying the start of fall!
